Thank you General for your service. I am worried about the military with Trump. He has removed the guardrails so that some will do his bidding against US citizens. Any reassurance that he won’t?

RIP Mr Shirley. His book A Better War was a seminal piece of one of my monographs. A great book from a great writer and historian. God Speed.

I liked Sorley's Vietnam book quite a bit, although it was marred every once in a while by political jibes. I'd like to read the others, though not in paper.

A firring memorial to him might be for somebody to edit Kindle or ebook editions.

Thank you HR for a beautiful note. I loved thunderbolt… It renewed my love of tanks and tankers and how we think prayers to the Sorley family.

This country has, historically, been built on the backs of men like Bob Sorley and you.

I fear we aren't getting that caliber of recruits anymore.

Thank you for your long device, and for a beautiful memorium.

Thankyou for writing about a great man that dedicated his life to service of our country. Yes we do need to remember the fall of Saigon, we as a country need to remember the devastation and scar that was left upon two countries.

Those who believe the Vietnam War was winnable are the same people who repeated the same mistakes in Afghanistan. They didn’t understand the histories and the culture of the countries they had invaded.

At this rate, when it comes to understanding ‘the enemy’ or who we, the people of the USA want to invade, we couldn’t even invade Canada legitimately or even the UK.

Moreover, none of them can understand who we are anymore. That’s how eff’d up America is now!

We are a shanda.

Per Sorley’s books, Westmoreland so mismanaged the conflict that Abrams later confided the US military was within 3 months of being forced out of country. While Abrams was ordered to create an honorable withdrawal, he felt the U.S. position by the time he left Vietnam was such that had he been ordered to win the conflict, he could have done so.

And Abrams would have been wrong, too.
